âItâs commonly said that the original âStar Warsâ changed Hollywood, and thatâs true. But it didnât change the movies the way âBonnie & Clydeâ (1967), âChinatownâ (1974) and âTaxi Driverâ (1976) did, by applying creative craftsmanship to raw, adult subject matter; or like the â30s movies âIt Happened One Night,â âThe Awful Truth,â and âBringing up Baby,â which undermined the moralistic strictures of the Hays Office with the libertine sophistication of screwball comedy.â
âInstead, âStar Warsâ transformed Hollywood economically, by establishing a blockbuster mentalityâand especially a mentality based on blockbusters made for teens. It wasnât the first film to do so; âJaws,â released in 1975, was a pioneer. But âStar Warsâ outdrew âJaws,â and the opportunities to exploit the product commercially were much greater.â
