Stephen Hawesâ poem Graunde Amoure shows that the five (inward) wits were âcommon witâ, âimaginationâ, âfantasyâ, âestimationâ, and âmemoryâ.[3] âCommon witâ corresponds to Aristotleâs concept of the sensus communis, and âestimationâ roughly corresponds to the modern notion of instinct.
[Five wits: common sense, fantasy, memory, judgement, imagination].
